Sustainability Narrative

When it was launched in 2003, Go Green was a ground-breaking campaign, incorporating green initiatives, sustainable business practices and educational programs as our core operating principals. Our mission continues to be creating and sustaining championship performance on the field and in the community through practices that promote the quality of life, green the environment, and improve one's impact on the planet.

The Eagles are the first professional sports organization to implement an environmental strategy, instituting recycling programs, operating on 100% clean energy, the procurement of post-consumer recycled paper products, tree-planting programs, the use of organic and pesticide-free materials on our playing and practice fields, the replacement of plastic cups and utensils with corn-based products, and bio-diesel fuel recycled from the cooking fats used in the team’s kitchens.

In 2008, the Philadelphia Eagles purchased 14 million kilowatt hours of wind power. This major purchase will allow the team to run on 100% renewable energy at Lincoln Financial Field and the NovaCare Complex training facility all year long. Working with Native Energy and MCEnergy, the Philadelphia Eagles have become the first NFL team to operate exclusively on clean energy.

The Philadelphia Eagles recognize that generating electricity is one of the leading contributors to climate change and global warming. The organization announced in April 2007, an ambitious program that rewards all Eagles employees in the PECO service area and NJ Power area who sign up for Wind Energy. The Eagles will reimburse employees for the cost so there will be no out-of-pocket cost to employees. The Eagles are the first organization to offer a reimbursement program of this kind.

The Eagles partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to create an Eagles Forest in Neshaminy State Park in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The 6.5-acre Eagles Forest features over 1,500 trees and shrubs. The Eagles also partnered with The Conservation Fund and their GO ZERO program to plant 870 trees in the Eagles Forest. These GO ZERO trees will off-set carbon emissions from the team’s away game air travel. Eagles fans have also played an important role in the growth of the forest by purchasing their own trees, through PhiladelphiaEagles.com to be planted.

Go Green has dramatically reduced the organization’s environmental footprint and impact on global warming. Since the introduction of the program the energy conservation and green power generation is equivalent to providing electricity for 2,700 homes in one year, the elimination of greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 3,800 automobiles off the road, the reduction in the trash stream of over 825 Americans and the preservation of almost 3,000 trees.

Recycling, using renewable energy resources, neutralizing carbon output, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and tree planting are all central to our Go Green program. Go Green is more than just a play on words for the Eagles. “Go Green” has become both a rallying cry for the football team and a good citizenship message for the community.

Results

We are proud that the Philadelphia Eagles were the first team in professional sports to adopt responsibility for the environment and its role in the community. The organization has been an industry and community leader in green initiatives. Since initiating the Go Green program in 2003, the Philadelphia Eagles have made enormous strides in reducing the organization's impact on the environment by:

• Running on 100% clean energy after purchasing 14 million kilowatt-hours of renewable wind energy.

• Replacing over 1 million plastic cups annually with cups made from a corn-based material, eliminating the consumption of over 14 tons of plastic.

• Substituting approximately 16.6 tons annually of additional plastic, foam and paper flatware and dinnerware (plates, bowls, etc.) with sustainable post-consumer product alternatives like corn-based bio-plastics.

• Implementing energy conservation programs reducing electricity consumption at Lincoln Financial Field by more than 33%.

• Replacing plastic bottles with aluminum bottles which has less of an environmental impact when recycled.

• Recycling over 175 tons of waste, 19% of refuse.

• Installing three state-of-the-art solar panels that track the sun throughout the day and produce 10kW of energy.

• Converting to 100% post-consumer recycled paper for all soft-tissue products, which will yield an additional annual savings of 10 tons of paper, or about 170 trees.

• Implementing an employee reimbursement program to encourage employees to switch from conventional power to wind energy. The participating employees are eliminating the emissions of 283 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

• Recycled over 550 tons of mixed metal, plastic, paper and cardboard.

• Reducing the printing of the team's Media Guide from 12,000 to 5,000 copies; saving 5,800 pounds of paper.

All of the Eagles Go Green efforts since 2003 equate to:

• Energy conservation and green power generation sufficient to providing electricity for 2,700 homes in one year. Elimination of greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 3,800 automobiles off the road.

• Reduction in the trash stream of over 825 Americans.

• Preservation of almost 3,000 trees.

Continuing at these current levels, the Go Green efforts will have the following impact every year:

• Energy conservation and green power generation will equate to providing electricity for almost 1,900 homes.

• There will be a reduction in the trash stream by about 260 American households saving over 1,200 trees.

• Eliminate greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 2,600 automobiles off the road.

The Philadelphia Eagles are committed to reducing the organization’s carbon footprint for the health and future of our environment. The Go Green program has accomplished a great deal since it’s inception in 2003, but the program will continue to grow with the team. Not only is our organization, but we believe our passionate and dedicated fans will join us in going green, making our planet a better place for our children and their future.
