I built 2400 sq ft homes in morton Pa in 1995. They used in 1997 35.00 a month for their total heating (which is baseboard hotwater) cooking (again natural gas) dryers NG and hotwater for shower etc NG. This is in the winter time when the temperature was 20 degrees farenhiet outside. The inside was 75 degrees. These homes have 5 or 4 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. They have a basement buried 12 feet underground built on a hill where the front of the house showed the window wells on the south side which is the front of the homes. These homes had concrete poured basements with 12 inch block on first floor and 8 inch cinder block on second floor and 2x6 inner walls on 3rd floor and 2x4 outter walls designed in a mansard style. The roofs are 30 yr rubber dibidend with 3/4 inch celotex against celings and 9 inch fiberglass insulation with air vents to vent heat in summer. The 3rd fllor walls are slanted with an inner wall and a outer wall which leaves a space to crawl through between the 2 walls. This also has venting to keep heat from leaving or entering. The cinderblock is filled with perlite - sand exploded. the exterior walls have 2 inch celotex against the cinder block with steel studs and 5/8 drywall and the ceilings are also insulated along the exterior walls. Then after finishing all the exterior walls the inned walls (all non structural) are built wedged against the celing and floor. They are not conduit for transferring heat or cold from and exterior wall to an interior wall.

These homes cost 50,000.00 in materail and my labor and a few helpers. They took me 7 months to build 6 homes = 3 twins. I studied cryogenics in the USMC and understand conduction convection evaporation condensation. These homes are listed as local air raid shelters. These could be built at todays prices of approximately 80,000.00 with the owner doing much of the building themselves. Utilizing the natural heat of the earth is the best free energy there is. Many homes around the country these days are not using basements. Its a shame. I also added in pipes around the inner basement walls before pouring the concrete floors. These pipes gather the naturally occuring radon and allow it to naturall vent out. If anyone wants help in designing an energy efficient home please feel free to contact me. Also please feel free to drive by and know on the doors of these homes in the 500 block of school street morton pa and ask the owners how they love their super energy efficient homes i built.

Sustainability Narrative
These homes save over 90% of the average homes in this region due to their design. they are also set up to easily have solar layed on their slightly sloped rubber roofs.
Results

These homes are also fire safe due to their design so as not to allow fire to race from one floor to the next. They utilize the natural heat of the earth which is always 56 degrees year round.
