frequently asked questionsfrequently asked questions

If I submitted a nomination last year, can I submit again this year?

YES!  We encourage 2007 and 2008 award nominees to resubmit their nomination for 2009.

If my organization or I won last year, can I resubmit?

2007 and 2008 Philadelphia Sustainability Award winners are not eligible to receive awards in 2009 for the same nomination.  Other projects or programs by the winner may be submitted. Finalists from 2007 and 2008 are encouraged to submit nominations for 2009.

Are self-nominations allowed?

Yes.  Nominations can be self nominations or nominations on behalf of another organization, project, person, etc. Who submits the nomination is not a factor in the judging process.

What are the benefits of submitting a nomination?

All nominations will be posted to this web site.  Over the past 2 years, the site has become a go-to source for those seeking information about Philadelphia's sustainability. More than 16,000 unique visitors have come to the site in the past couple years.  In the past, this has generated new business and networking opportunities for nominees.

What do winners receive?

The winners receive recognition as a leader or innovator in sustainability.  The physical awards will be similar to past award plaques. In the sustainable tradition, these awards were designed and created by a local artist, who used natural materials and reclaimed wood to create the unique award.

Since one of the goals of the Philadelphia Sustainability Awards is to raise awareness of our region's leaders and innvoators, there are media opportunities for finalists and winners.

  1. Finalists will be featured in a supplement in the Philadelphia Business Journal, read by about 98,000 area business leaders, on February 27, 2009.
  2. In the past, the Awards ceremony and winners have been featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer, City Paper, WPVI (ABC6), local papers, trade magazines, and online publications.
  3. Some winners have been the subject of 5-minute television programs airing on MiND-tv as part of the Sustainable Philadelphia series. The series may continue in 2009. Click here to see programs on winners: One Crescent Drive: A sustainable workplace; Wissahickon Charter School; and Jackie O'Neil's Zero Energy Home.

NEW FOR 2009: Winners will have the opportunity to display information and materials at a booth at the Go Green Expo, coming to Philadelphia March 13 - 15th. Details to follow. Winners may also be featured in a profile on www.philly.com's GREEN section.

If I'm nominating someone else, whose contact information should I include?

The person submitting the nomination should list his/her contact information (name, organization, phone, email), even if you're nominating someone or something else.  Include the name of the business, organization, person, etc. you are nominating in the Entry Title field.  Kindly inform the nominee that you have nominated on their behalf.  If that nomination is selected as a finalist, we may ask you to put us in touch with them so that we can obtain additional information - like who will accept the award in their behalf!

Do photos need to be print quality?

Photos will be used primarily for the web site so they do not need to be print quality files. Acceptable formats include PDF, MS Word, GIF, JPEG, and PNG.

Do I have to be from Philadelphia to submit a nomination?

The Philadelphia Sustainability Awards celebrate success throughout the Greater Philadelphia region, which includes Philadelphia's surrounding counties in Southeast Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.  Nominations can come from anywhere (we had nominations from New York last year) as long as you can demonstrate a measurable impact on the Greater Philadelphia region.

Who is coordinating the Philadelphia Sustainability Awards?

The awards program is a group effort by seven regional organizations.  The Pennsylvania Environmental Council is the lead organization coordinating the program. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has graciously agreed to host the ceremony at the Philadelphia Flower Show.  Additionally, PennFuture, Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, Delaware Valley Green Building Council, The Reinvestment Fund and the City of Philadelphia have committed and enormous amount support and energy to the awards program. More information about each of these organizations can be found on the Partners page.
